Bye, 2019; Hello, 2020

Wow, last year was a very eventful year for me and my work. And fun! CRAZY BETTY was named a 2019 O’Neill Playwrights Conference Finalist, selected as one of 67 plays from more than 1400 submissions. And it is such an honor to now be included in the O’Neill family. CRAZY BETTY was also a semi-finalist in the Bay Area Playwrights Festival.

Got to spend a couple of weeks in August in NYC preparing for the Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival and finally the presentation of my play “Mama Won’t Stay Dead” in the OOB Festival. What a great group of playwrights, 30 all together, and quite the party– during the kick-off gala at Samuel French offices, surrounded by many of the plays they have published over the years, we got to hear the wonderful playwright Lauren Yee talk about her career and writing.

And now, it’s 2020. I am now one of the resident playwrights at The Writers Room in Sacramento and am excited about the great work going on there: plans for a fall production of CRAZY BETTY and a spring reading of my new play Speak Ill of the Dead. I also plan to be part of an evening of short plays that will be presented over the next couple of months.

So glad to be writing and having my work acknowledged and produced. Stay tuned: More things in the works!

It has been great watching the play come alive under the direction of Director Ivey Lowe and actresses Denise Hughes and Mia Y. Anderson. Everyone is working really hard to get the show up tomorrow night and having fun while doing it.

OOB Festival starts next week!

NYC: I’m in New York and really excited to be here. Director Ivey Lowe and I are getting ready for rehearsals and gathering the props for my play “Mama Won’t Stay Dead.” The opening night party is Monday and the keynote speaker will be fabulous playwright Lauren Yee. Then the actual festival begins on Tuesday. My play will be presented Thursday, August 22 at 7 pm. My spouse will be arriving from California and we will be joined by friends that night. What fun! Really looking forward to seeing my work come alive under the steady had of Ivey and with our two marvelous actors. Stay tuned!

Meet Ivey Lowe

I am so excited to be working with Ivey Lowe, who will be producing and directing my play “Mama Won’t Stay Dead” for the 44th Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival. Ivey is a New York-based director who has directed at the Hangar Theater, Bloomington Playwrights Project, and the Williamstown Theatre Festival, to name only a few. She was a Drama League Directing Fellow and part of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab. And, lo and behold, she is also from the South, Georgia to be exact, and now lives in Brooklyn. She said she had no trouble at all relating to the two Southern women in “Mama”.

Getting Ready for NYC

2019 has been a tremendous year so far.  My play CRAZY BETTY was a finalist in the prestigious O’Neill 2019 National Playwrights Conference, one of 67 chose from more than 1400 submissions.  What an honor!

And now, we are preparing to take my short play, “Mama Won’t Stay Dead” to NYC as part of the 44th Annual Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival.  “Mama” was one of 30 chosen from more than 900 submissions to be presented during this mid-August festival and will be presented Thursday, August 22.  Ten finalists will be chosen during the week to be presented on Saturday, August 24.  Tickets go on sale in mid-June. I will keep you posted.

I am delighted to announce that my producer/director will be Ivey Lowe, another Southern transplant, born and raised in Georgia but now residing and working in NYC.  We’ll be making more announcements about casting as it unfolds.  Stayed tuned.  Exciting times!
